Day 16
Location: Washington D.C.
Biked 7.0 miles and then did an arms strength training workout. I did the workout with free weights today, which is quite a luxury in a hotel fitness center. Really good workout and now I am contemplating getting a gym membership so I can keep this up. Previously, I only used resistance bands, which are nice, but they limit you on what you can do.

Day 15
Location: Columbus, Ohio
Ran fives miles with a friend of mine. She didn't finish, but I did. The first two miles were at a slower pace and then after she left, I sprinted the remainder of the run. I have really seen an improvement in speed and I think that is because of the High Intensity Interval Training (HIIT) that I do usually once or twice a week. The workout I did last week was something like this:
Walk 3.0: 4 mins
Sprint 6.0: 1 min
Walk 3.0: 1 min
Sprint 7.0: 1 min

Sprint 8.0: 1 min
Walk 3.0: 1 min
Sprint 9.0: 1 min
Walk 3.0: 1 min
Sprint 10.0: 1 min
Alternate between 10.0 and 3.0 (minute each) until I reach 30 minutes total
Weight: 149.2

Ran four milles. Not much to report. Skipping the strength training portion of today.

Day 12
Location: Philadelphia, Pennsylvania
Swam for 400 yards today. Did 50-80 yards at a time. Still having trouble breathing. I start off strong with (I think) good form, but then I have trouble getting enough air and then my form goes south. I made a conscience effort to go slower and I think that helped. I also think it will help when I swim in a larger pool to build up my endurance.
Today, I also did an arms strength training workout. Overall, it was a good day.

Fell behind on the updates, sorry, doing a few a once. Did a double cardio workout today. Ran 30 minutes of high intensity interval training (HIIT) and 20 minutes on the recumbent bike.

Day 10
Location: Columbus, Ohio
Double Digits! Unfortunately, I took today off. Didn't get much sleep last night, and felt tired and lethargic all day. Took a nap, then it started to rain. I'll be back on schedule tomorrow.

Day 9
Location: Greensboro, North Carolina
Did a double cardio day. Ran about four miles and swam an undefined amount. The run was nice, but it was very hilly, so I didn't go as fast a I would have liked. I also got lost during the run, which added an additional half mile.
The swim was good, but still having trouble getting enough air. Looking forward to some coaching from my swimmer friend.

Day 8
Location: Columbus, Ohio
Went for a nice long run this evening; five miles in total. Ran up High Street, through German Village, around Schiller Park a few times and then headed home. Starting to run more and more at night and really liking it. Its quiet, cool, and there are less cars; however, I'm sure I have a better chance of getting mugged. This week, if I ever find some time, I am going to talk about my nutrition (or lack there of).

Day 6
Location: Columbus, Ohio
Had every intention to go for a run the afternoon as well as some strength training after. I took a nap, before my scheduled run, and was woken up by pouring down rain. Later there were two cycles of hail. The rain lasted for about an hour and when it finished, it left the street completely flooded. So I am using this as a convenient excuse as to why I didn't work out today. I've attached a picture as proof. Got a wedding in the morning, and Saturdays are my day off, so next workout is Sunday.

Day 5
Location: Ironwood, Michigan
Did another double cardio workout. I ran (at a nice pace) for three miles and swam for 200 yards. Another short post, was delayed getting home tonight and I am ready for bed.
While in Ironwood, I did do a little hiking along the Black River, which leads in to Lake Superior. There are a lot of really neat waterfalls and here are a few pictures. Enjoy!

Day 4
Location: Appleton, Wisconsin
Another short post, have to go to work in a few. Did thirty minutes or 5.5 miles of biking on a stationary bike, defiantly looking forward to getting my own bike soon. After the biking, I did a bicep and triceps workout.

Day 3
Location: Flint, Michigan
For the most part another successful day. I ran four miles through the sidewalk-less Flint, Michigan, and I made another attempt at swimming. Due to my own laziness and lack of planning, I got a late start to my run which led to a considerable decrease in the time I was able to swim. I was going to ditch the swim all together, but I decided I needed the practice, even it was only a little bit. The pool at the hotel was nice, and (by counting the tiles lining the pool deck) I concluded it was a little over ten yards long. I did ten laps, which led to a 100 yard swim. Progress: yes, but it still worries me. That's all for now, I could write more, but its late and I'm ready for bed.

Day 2
Location: Columbus, Ohio
Did the same three mile run as yesterday. Beautiful day and it wasn't too hot, so it went pretty well. After my run I did about an hour of strength training focusing on the chest and shoulders. It didn't go as well as the run, but I know over time I will improve. I'm doing the strength training to compliment my cardio training for the triathlon, so I don't care about my performance as much, but I would still like to improve it that area. Tomorrow I am going to swim and either bike or run. Off to work; Flint, Michigan here I come!

Day 1
Location: Columbus, Ohio
Fairly easy start, quick three mile run through the neighborhood. After two and a half years and three half marathons, I finally purchased new running shoes. I don't really prescribe to the pronation claims made be most reliable running stores, and I purchased Nike Free 7.0. They're super light weight and simulate something close to barefoot running. I've only used them a couple of times, but I really like them.
I'm also going to weigh myself every Sunday just to see if there are any changes.
Weight: 148.2

Training Schedule
Even though my work life is different from week to week, I have devised a training schedule I'm going to try and adhere to. It will consist of three or three days a week of double cardio workouts (swim/bike, swim/run, and bike/run) and two or three days of single cardio workouts coupled with strength training. I'm also interested in incorporating yoga a couple of times a week to work on my flexibility and posture. So a sample workout schedule would look like this:
Sunday: Bike or Run
Monday: Swim/Strength
Tuesday: Swim & Run/Yoga
Wednesday: Bike/Strength
Thursday: Bike & Run/Yoga
Friday: Run/Strength
Saturday: Rest or Light Run
This schedule, and future ones, is organized around my time at the hotels I stay at. Since I am doing all my training in hotel pools (funny, I know), both swims are in the beginning of the week, since that's usually when I work.
Now, I just need to find a bike.

My Journey
Welcome! The purpose of this blog is to serve as a record of my progress for the triathlon that I'm training for and also as a place to post info and tips I find online for future reference. The race I am training for consists of a .6 mile swim, 24.8 mile bike, and a 6.55 mile run. I'm doing this because it's something I have always wanted to try, but also to have a goal/reason to stay in shape. I travel about fifty percent of the month for work, so it's hard to establish a good training routine from week to week. It changes depending when I work and where I am.
This is the first triathlon I have trained for. I'm an avid runner, so that portion doesn't scare me and the biking doesn't seem too bad, however the swimming portion keeps me up at night.
For the past two weeks I have been doing some light swimming/biking/running to get me back in the swing of things, but training officially begins June 12th. Seeya then.
